Chapter 2
Wells
The design of well completion and operation requires an understanding
of the likely interwell flow characteristics. In fractured reservoirs the
fractures can form a significant component of the flow capacity, and
hence their impact needs to be quantified. Such a study involves several steps:
- characterisation of the fracture system from the well data;
- generation and calibration of models of the fractures;
- quantify and scope near-well fracture connectivity;
- characterisation of fracture flow properties;
- quantification of fracture network flow component.
The first three of these steps are sufficient to understand the scale
and likelihood of fracture connectivity on the interwell scale, and
hence assess the potential for fractures to affect well performance.
These aspects of fracture characterisation and connectivity are
illustrated in this chapter.
The final two steps are required for detailed modelling of the interwell
flows. An illustration of these aspects is presented in the reservoir
characterisation case study.
The scene opposite shows the 4 vertical and 2 horizontal wells in the
example, plus the fractures they intersect.
The diameter of the wells is exaggerated.
