Groundwater modelling is an important tool for the management of water resources. It can be used to provide predictions of the transient behaviour of natural underground aquifers, and to help optimise groundwater extraction policies.

NAMMU can model large aquifer systems using three dimensional models or two dimensional areal models. The effects of mining or other large-scale engineering activities on water resources can be modelled effectively using NAMMU.

NAMMU also has well-developed capabilities in modelling saline intrusion due to groundwater extraction, and the storage of freshwater in aquifers containing brines. It can also be used to model factors which may affect water quality.
