Description
The main window is displayed when GeoVisage starts and is present thoughout the
session. GeoVisage exits when the main window is closed.
The main window consists of a menu bar at the top with a tool bar below it.
On the left of the window is the session tree that
allows the features in a session to browsed and their properties set.
On the right of the window is the render panel
that allows the image of the current session to be viewed and manipulated.
The bottom of the window contains progress and status information.
Menus
File menu
- Open
- Opens a new session file.
This can also be carried out by pressing the ctrl-O keys.
The file can be in any of the supported session file formats.
Session files are files that replace the current session when they are loaded.
Any existing session is discarded before the new session is loaded.
A progress bar at the bottom of the window indicates the progress of loading the
session files.
While a session file is loading the Cancel button can be used to abort the
load. This button is only enabled while a data file is actually being read.
- Save
- Saves the session to the current GeoVisage session (.gvs) file.
This can also be carried out by pressing the ctrl-S keys.
If no session file has previously been used then the user is prompted for the file
to save to and asked to confirm the action if the file already exists.
GeoVisage session files store information about all the files that have been
loaded and all the settings that have been applied in the session.
Loading one of these files should restore GeoVisage to the state it was in when the
session was saved.
- Save As
- Saves the session to a GeoVisage session (.gvs) file.
The user is prompted for the file to save to and asked to confirm the action if the file already exists.
- Properties
- Displays the application properties
dialog box.
This allows properties relating to the application as a whole to be set,
such as the background colour of the render panel or the display of coordinate axes.
- Save image
- Saves the current session image in the render panel to a graphics file.
Images can be saved as JPEG, PNG, TIF, BMP, postscript or VRML files.
- Exit
- Shuts down GeoVisage (only available in stand-alone mode).
This can also be carried out by pressing the ctrl-X keys.
The user is prompted to save the session before exiting.
- Close
- Discards the current session and closes the GeoVisage windows (only available when launched from NAPSAC or
CONNECTFLOW).
This can also be carried out by pressing the ctrl-X keys.
The user is prompted to save the session before closing.
Help menu
- About
- Displays summary information about the GeoVisage application, including the
current version.
- Contents
- Displays the contents page of the on-line help.
Tool bar
- Open

- Opens a new session file.
This is equivalent to selecting Open from the File menu.
- Save

- Saves the current session to a GeoVisage session (.gvs)
file.
This is equivalent to selecting Save from the File menu.
- Properties

- Displays the application properties
dialog box.
This is equivalent to selecting Properties from the File menu.
- Save image

- Allows the current session image in the render panel to be saved to a graphics
file.
This is equivalent to selecting Save image from the File menu.
- Reset

- Resets the session image in the render panel.
The view is changed to make the whole image centred and visible. All rotation
angles are reset to zero.
- Pick

- Starts or ends pick mode.
When in pick mode the cursor changes to a cross-hair and the pick toolbar button is
highlighted.
While in pick mode, clicking on a point causes a red ball to be placed on the
picked point and information about that point is displayed in the lower right
corner of the render panel. This information includes the coordinates of the
point and any attribute value the point has.
This mode remains active until pick mode mode is exited or fly to mode is
entered.
- Fly to

- Starts or ends fly-to mode.
When in fly-to mode the cursor changes to a cross and the fly-to toolbar button is
highlighted.
While in fly-to mode, clicking on a point moves the display to zoom in on and centre
on the point. Clicking again on the same point zooms in further.
This mode remains active until fly-to mode is exited or pick mode is
entered.
